Lab Sweden

Join us for Lab Sweden in Gothenburg, during Gothenburg Dance and Theatre Festival 23–27 August 2016!
During the 2016 edition of Gothenburg Dance and Theatre Festival, Candoco Dance Company and Danskompaniet Spinn, will collaborate with some great partners in the City of Gothenburg to create Lab Sweden – an artistic lab for inclusive dance and performing artists.
Lab Sweden is a unique opportunity for disabled and non-disabled artists (18 years+) to come together, take risks, test new ideas and share practice.
The Lab has been initiated by the Swedish dance company Spinn and the structure of the lab is taken from the established and much acclaimed International Lab by Candoco.

We are very happy to offer this event within the framework of Gothenburg Dance and Theatre Festival – Sweden’s most established festival for international performing art. The 13th edition of the Gothenburg Dance and Theatre Festival will take place between 18–27 August. Lab Sweden takes place at the Museum of World Culture. Their aim is to function as a platform for dialogues and reflections, where many different voices can be heard and controversial and contentious topics discussed – a place where people can feel at home and reach across borders. With dance and theatre companies such as Batsheva Dance Company, Schaubühne/Katie Mitchell, Ultima Vez, Marlene Monteiro Freitas, Sarah Vanhee and Arkadi Zaides the festival offers a diverse programme of contemporary performing art.

For Lab Sweden we have invited the artistic directors Richard Gregory and Renny O’Shea from the much acclaimed theatre company Quarantine. The company is based in Manchester, UK and for nearly 20 years has made performance and other public events all over the world, developing material from everyday life – working with both virtuosic performers and people who have done nothing like this before. Quarantine construct a dramaturgy of the real, creating circumstances for conversation between strangers, in theatres and in public space. In the lab they will share some of their work and practice with the participants, exploring ideas around seeing and being seen, and using the everyday as a source of material.  Quarantine’s workshops will involve excursions into the world outside – and bringing the “real world” back into the lab itself…
During the week, Lab Participants will also see two performances – Wallflower by Quarantine and Of Ivory and Flesh with the Portuguese choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas
