Hi Alayna!

You’ve been doing an internship at Danskompaniet Spinn for the past month. I know you’re in Svartvitt porträtt. En närbild på en ung kvinna, med mörka ögon och och mörkt hår.high school at the Swedish National Ballet School in Stockholm. But for those who don’t know you:

I grew up in the US and moved here with my family in 2017. We used to live in Washington State, and before that in California. For one year, we traveled around the US, living in an RV. One summer, my parents traveled around Sweden, Finland, and Denmark and really liked Sweden, so my dad applied for a job here, and that’s how we ended up moving.

In the US, I danced in my free time, and my mom started looking for schools in Sweden that included dance. She found the Swedish National Ballet School in Gothenburg. We flew here, and I did entrance exams for three days and got accepted. I was about to start fifth grade. Later, when it was time to apply for high school, I applied to the Swedish National Ballet School in Stockholm, where I’m now studying the modern dance program.

What made you interested in pursuing an education in dance?

When I was younger, I danced mostly because it was fun, and I enjoyed performing. After moving to Sweden, I’ve broadened my experience in different styles. It feels like Europe has a lot of creativity to offer. In the US, I participated in competitions with group choreographies, trios, and solos. In the US, the focus is more on competing and working on technical execution rather than creativity and artistry.

What does dance mean to you?

For me, dance expresses what words cannot. It’s creativity and a sense of security. Even if I don’t continue dancing forever, it will always be a part of me.

What have you been doing during your internship at Spinn?

I’ve participated in various workshops, performances, and the development of upcoming projects. It’s been interesting to see the different activities the ensemble does with children during the workshops. It’s been educational to see how you can work with kids and young people in the dance field. I’ve also worked a bit with technical aspects and behind-the-scenes tasks.

What has been the most inspiring part of your time at Spinn?

The atmosphere in Spinn’s ensemble. How they communicate with each other. The focus in the studio, their patience, and the sense of safety. Also, being honest and daring to take space, speaking your mind with someone who listens.

And finally – what’s your favorite pastry or dessert?

Croissant – it’s the first thing I look for at a brunch. Even better if it’s with chocolate, warm, soft, and delicious.
